HR Generalist - Virginia ABC

Under the general direction of the Director of Human Resources, the HR Generalist manages the compensation program to attract, retain and motivate employees by performing the following duties.


  • Provide support in all areas of human resources with a strong focus on tasks related to compensation and performance management.
  • Administers salary administration program to ensure compliance and equity within the organization. Reviews and approves salary increases permitted within budgetary limits and according to established compensation policies.
  • Create and maintain organizational charts and HR dashboards.
  • Assist in the development of and implementation of personnel policies and procedures. Responds to inquiries related to policies, procedures and programs. Maintain compliance with federal, state and local employment laws.
  • Assist in the preparation of job descriptions. Write job descriptions when needed. Conducts job analysis to determine appropriate salary level according to compensation guidelines and policy.
  • Advises management on compensation actions for employees. Analyzes organizational pay practices and makes recommendations for salary changes to ensure equity.
  • Participates in development and administration of performance review system to ensure compliance and salary administration guidelines.
  • Recommends special compensation programs or incentive systems for all employees or for a specific group to support the organization’s objectives.
  • Provide support and assistance to other HR generalists or HR functions.
  • All other duties as assigned.
  • Serves as Economic Interest Administrator.
  • Creates, maintains and ensures quality assurance of key human resources data sets, reports and metrics. Serves as the key representative on external benchmarks and surveys supporting the HR function.


  • Experience working across different departments and locations.
  • Advanced knowledge of employment law, wage and hour, FLSA and EEO laws.
  • Strong analytical skills and influencing ability.
  • In-depth knowledge of compensation and classification practices gained from significant experience in the compensation field. Ability to understand and interpret compensation surveys (Mercer, Hay, ERI etc.).
  • Working knowledge of HRIS systems.
  • Ability to travel if needed.
  • Expert communication skills both written and verbal; particularly successful in listening and understand various points of view.
  • Proficiency with Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio and Adobe applications. Advanced ability to generate queries and reports using Excel.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills at all levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and interpret policies.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve complex issues and provide sound guidance to management.
  • Experience administering performance management programs


  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or related field.
  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of HR experience with four or more years of compensation experience.
  • Human Resources certification and/or compensation certification preferred.
