History of RCA

The Richmond Compensation Association was formed in 1982 by three compensation professionals - Greg Broome from Philip Morris, Inc., Larry Gilmer from Trigon Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Will Hetzel from Reynolds Metals. These three men met at a WorldAtWork (formerly the American Compensation Association) meeting in Philadelphia and talked over dinner about the need to have some type of forum in Richmond for compensation professionals to meet and exchange ideas.

The first meeting of Richmond compensation professionals took place at Philip Morris U.S.A. with 25 attendees. The attendees were asked if they felt there was a need to organize a group for the Richmond area to discuss current compensation issues and exchange ideas on a variety of compensation policies, methods, and programs used in their respective companies. The response was unanimous - there was a need for such a forum!

The group named themselves the Richmond Compensation Association (RCA) and agreed on some initial governing guidelines. Some of those guidelines still govern today's RCA.

In an effort to collect money for WorldatWork (formerly ACA) certification courses, the Board of Directors decided a tax ID was needed and the group would have to be incorporated. The Articles of Incorporation and By-laws were written and made official in July 1987. Dues were needed to assure the group had sufficient moneys to cover expenses and were originally set at $10.

RCA continues to rely on its members to provide the input and focus that will enable the organization to continue to meet the needs of its members. RCA draws its strength from its membership and depends on member involvement. The board encourages your and your company's involvement and commitment.
